I can’t imagine this D.A. will get re-elected.  I understand the need to plea bargain when evidence is weak, but there has to be a better way for such a horrible crime.  Either there was no case or this criminal defense attorney was exceptionally talented.

Short eyes likes little girls - and the DA who gave him a slap on the wrist.

Two state lawmakers are questioning a plea agreement that will allow a man to serve only one year in jail on a conviction for raping a 4-year-old girl.

Nineteen of the 20 years of a sentence against 64-year-old David Harold Earls were suspended as part of a plea agreement reached with Pittsburg County prosecutors.

State Reps. Mike Ritze, R-Broken Arrow, and Mike Reynolds, R-Oklahoma City, have sought removal proceedings against Judge Thomas Bartheld for approving the plea deal.

“It concerned me very much they went so lenient with someone with a previous criminal record. We need to look at it to see what is going on in the courts,” Ritze said.

District Attorney Jim Bob Miller says prosecutors did not have any DNA evidence and determined after two days of working with Earls’ accuser that the girl — who is now 5 years old — was not able to testify…

Sadly, this is another entry in the category of ‘Absurd Justice.’  This guy admitted to killing his wife after only 11 days.  Unbelievably, he was sentenced to only time served.  He will be free to marry and kill again.  Remind me to avoid travel to Australia where violent crime is completely out of control.

The Watsons during happier times.

An American man pleaded guilty and was sentenced Friday for the manslaughter of his wife, who drowned during their honeymoon scuba diving trip in Australia. Her body was found on the ocean floor.

In move that outraged the victim’s family, David Gabriel Watson will serve just one year of the four-and-a-half-year sentence in the death of his wife of 11 days, Christina Mae Watson. She died in 2003 as the couple dove off the tropical coast of Queensland. The suspended sentence is not unusual in such crimes in Queensland.

Watson, of Birmingham, Alabama, was to stand trial in the Queensland Supreme Court for murder, which carried a potential sentence of life in prison, until the prosecution accepted the guilty plea to the lesser charge.

Prosecutor Brendan Campbell told the court the manslaughter plea was accepted on the basis that the 32-year-old Watson – trained to rescue panicked divers – failed in his duty as her dive buddy by not giving her emergency oxygen.

Campbell said Watson allowed his wife to sink to the ocean floor without attempting to retrieve her, and he did not inflate her buoyancy vest or remove weights from her belt…

Luckily, ‘Absurd Justice’ is one of my least populated categories on this blog.  However, this one definitely belongs.  How can someone who repeatedly rapes a child receive NO jail time.  This is simply outrageous!!

Vincent LeCompte admitted raping a 6-year-old girl, but instead of jail time Lecompte received a suspended sentence and 20 years probation. It was part of a plea bargain deal, that even the victims family agreed to, out of fear. What was there to fear?

“That Vince LeCompte would walk with nothing, and he put a baby through hell. She will never have a normal childhood. He took it away,” explained the victim’s grandmother.

Family members said LeCompte raped that child repeatedly over the course of several years, but could not force the young victim to take the witness stand for a fourth time.

“It devastated her. She had to take the witness stand three times,” said her grandmother. “We had to think about my grand-baby on this. She just can’t do it no more. We don’t want her raped again and again and again…”

Seems something of a victimless crime here.  Kids are still going to explore their sexuality no matter how much we might wish they didn’t.  I suppose the D.A. is trying to make a point or a name for himself.  Seems like a waste of time and resources to me.

A 15-year-old girl from central Pennsylvania faces child pornography charges after police say she sent nude pictures of herself over the Internet.

Clearfield County District Attorney William Shaw says the girl has been charged as a juvenile with possessing, distributing and creating child pornography.

The girl is living with her mother. Authorities say the girl sent the pictures after communicating in June 2007 with a 27-year-old man over the MySpace networking Web site…

Note how no mention is made of the perpetrators or their fates, if any.  This kind of punishment must be very encouraging to fledgling rapists in the middle east.  One has to wonder how these people ever came to be regarded as our allies.
