Cold Case Solved After 18 Years

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Law enforcement deserves congratulations on this one.  I wish there were more resources for cold case squads everywhere.  Put yourself in the shoes of a parent who has lost a child.  It’s not clear why police waited for so long.  This guy was a prime suspect from the beginning.

A Virginia man has been charged with killing a camp counselor who was sexually assaulted and shot once in the head while on a hike in the Poconos 18 years ago, authorities said Friday.

Jeffrey J. Plishka, 46, of Onley, Va., was arrested in the 1991 murder of Laura Ronning, a 24-year-old from St. Petersburg, Fla., said Wayne County District Attorney Michael Lehutsky.

Ronning was working at Camp Cayuga near Honesdale when she disappeared on July 27, 1991, while taking a walk to Tanner’s Falls, a nearby waterfall. Her partially clad body was discovered the next morning.

Authorities became suspicious of Plishka shortly after Ronning’s body was found, but it was not until an interview earlier this year that investigators were confident enough to make an arrest, Lehutsky said.

During the interview, Plishka denied doing anything to Ronning, but twice told police, “I hope I didn’t kill that girl,” according to court documents. He also asked the investigators what he should do if he later remembered he had done something.

Plishka was charged with first-, second- and third-degree murder and attempted involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and was being held in Accomack County Jail while awaiting extradition proceedings…

Woman Dies After Baby Cut from Womb

Friday, July 31st, 2009

I can’t imagine the savagery of such a crime.  I don’t understand how someone so twisted and demented can think she would be a fit mother.  Murder negates all the maternal instincts of a woman.  The perp was arrested after showing up at a shelter with the child but no papers.  At least the child is alive and well.

A woman suspected of carving a nearly full-term baby girl from her friend’s womb and passing the newborn off as her own was being held on $2 million bail Thursday.

Julie Corey, 35, has been charged as a fugitive from justice. She appeared in district court in New Hampshire via video from the county jail, a day after she was arrested at a homeless shelter in the state, allegedly with the live infant.

She said little during the hearing, at which Judge Gerald Boyle ordered all police affidavits in the case sealed…

The baby is said to be “in fairly good health,” police said. The infant’s mother, 23-year-old Darlene Haynes, was about 8 months pregnant when she was killed.

Corey did not waive extradition to be brought back to Massachusetts. The judge scheduled a hearing for Aug. 30.

Man Arrested for Murder of Girl

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

It seems criminal history repeats itself with the same alarming frequency with which world history repeats itself.  How many useless punks think they can just kill and kill with impunity?  They all end up in prison with the same lifeless look in their eyes.  Just like this turd.

A Salt Lake City newspaper reports that authorities have a warrant to search cell phones for evidence that a man allegedly ordered the killing of a woman who he believed planned to be a police informant.

The Deseret News reports that police and prosecutors believe cell phone photographs, text messages and contact lists might contain more information related to the December shooting death of Ashley Sparks. The paper says officials were recently granted a search warrant to review the phones being held as evidence.

Prosecutors have charged 22-year-old Joshua Binkerd with aggravated murder in Sparks’ death. According to an affidavit, Binkerd allegedly asked Christopher Alvey to “take care of” Sparks because he was worried she would tell police his gang was dealing drugs and making fake checks.

The affidavit says that on the day of the slaying, Binkerd allegedly called Alvey’s cell phone and told him “to make sure that Ms. Sparks did not come back” and that Alvey understood this to mean that it was “his obligation to kill her.”

Jordanelle State Park officials found the 21-year-old Sparks shot four times and near death on Dec. 26. She died soon after…

Girl Murdered to Avoid Child Support

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

If this results in a conviction, I can’t imagine anything more horrible for a child to find out at the end of her short life than her father was a murderer.  Parents are supposed to be willing to do anything for their kids.  Apparently, the only thing this guy cares about is his wallet.

Cameron allegedly threw his daughter off a cliff.

Cameron allegedly threw his daughter off a cliff.

A father who had no interest in his 4-year-old daughter did the unimaginable – hurling her off a 36.5m cliff to avoid paying child support, a prosecutor said Monday during the man’s murder retrial.

Cameron Brown, 47, was charged with one count of murder and the special circumstance allegations of murder while lying in wait and murder for financial gain in the death of Lauren Sarene Key in November 2000. Brown, a former American Airlines baggage handler, has pleaded not guilty and faces life in prison without parole if convicted.

Deputy District Attorney Craig Hum said during his opening statement that Brown killed Lauren because he didn’t want to pay about US$1,000 (S$1,450) a month in child support.

Defence attorney Pat Harris countered that it was an accident when the girl fell from Inspiration Point in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Mr Hum portrayed Brown as an uncaring father. He argued that Brown and Lauren went out to the cliff where nobody could see them, and he ‘hurled’ her into the Pacific Ocean.

‘This man picked up Lauren, whom he fathered but was never a father to, and threw her off a cliff into the water below,’ Mr Hum said.

Brown, wearing a dark suit and a red tie, stared at Hum during his opening statement and showed no reaction…

Murderer May Have Killed Others

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

I lived on the Russian River for two years and can tell you it is a beautiful, serene body of water.  To have that bucolic paradise shattered by a heinous – and unsolved – double murder is horrible.  This crime has gone unsolved for several years and the case even made on America’s Most Wanted.  Now, it appears this guy – who did this type of crime  before – may be the perp of an unsolved double murder in Sonoma County, a case that came to be known as the Jenner Beach Murders.  He was shot to death by police after breaking into a cabin.  The investigation continues, but it looks like this guy fits for the crime.

A double coward: a murderer and a draft-dodger.

Sonoma County investigators are looking into whether a burglary suspect who was living in the wild before he shot and killed a sheriff’s deputy in New Mexico last week was responsible for two of the Bay Area’s most mysterious unsolved killings.

Their bodies were found Aug. 18, 2004. They had been shot to death with a .45-caliber Marlin rifle that was never found…
